This design project is a collaboration with a shoe designer Yunfei Ma. She approached us to design a series of accessories namely iconic heels for her shoe design collection. We designed a number of unique signature heels that were inspired by architecture references of brutalist movement. Another concept and inspiration for us was Kintsugi – the ancient Japanese technique of pottery repairing with melted gold. Both these concepts were forming our design language for the accessories. We also experimented with digital algorithms that simulate cracking of solid objects to recreate the Kintsugi effect digitally in 3D software.
The final outcome was produced in a variety of digital fabrication techniques and materials. Some of the heels were produced using CNC-milling of transparent acrylic blocks and wooden blocks. Other heels were using 3D printing technique for its prototyping as well as production.
